Times Square, named after the one-time head office of The New York Times. It is located in the region of Manhattan, New York City, which centres on 42nd Street and Broadway. It forms the western portion of the business district of Midtown Manhattan, New York.

The paper's operations were relocated by Adolph S. Ochs, New York Times publisher, to a new tower on 42nd Street in the middle of the area known as Longacre Square. Ochs convinced Mayor George B. McClellan Jr to develop a subway stop at the site and named it Times Square. Officiated by Mayor McClellan, the location was officially named as Times Square on April 8, 1904.

In 1913, the newspaper moved out of the tower but remained in the locality. One Times Square tower, formerly known as the Allied Chemical Building, is the setting of the annual New Year's Eve ball drop that substituted the fireworks display of 1904 to 1906. It was December 31, 1907 when the ball, representing New Year's Day was first dropped at Times Square and from that time the Square has been the location of the main New Year's celebration in New York City. A minute of silence, and after that a recording of church bells pealing, took the place of the ball drop on account of wartime blackout restrictions during World War II.

The millennium celebration in New York on December 31, 1999 is seen as the largest gathering in Times Square since August 1945. Celebrations acknowledging the end of World War II generated reports of approximately two million people within Times Square.

Times Square rapidly developed as a cultural centre including theatres, music halls and luxurious accommodations. However, the 1930s and the start of the Great Depression shifted the overall tone downward. Times Square became a district full of "peep shows", all-night movie houses, and stores marketing cheap tourist commodities. It began to be considered a dangerous location.

Removing 'red light' interests and increasing security in the area, provided the way for the opening of more tourist-friendly attractions. Such initiatives were led by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani in the mid-1990s. This revitalisation began when the local authorities issued a sanction in opposition to the tight clustering of aforementioned businesses in the 42nd Street area. Many such shops closed or relocated to industrial areas in Brooklyn or Queens. These changes allowing for and encouraging far more fashionable establishments to move in.

Broadway's theatres and the numerous animated neon and television-like billboards have made it one of New York's symbolic images, competing with Las Vegas on the density of lighted signs.

In 1992, the Times Square Alliance, a partnership of businesses, began improving the quality of business and cleanliness in the region. At present, Times Square provides attractions such as a major TV studio for ABC, restaurants and a number of movie theatre complexes. It has become a magnet for large financial, publishing, and media corporations. A larger police visibility in Times Square has enhanced the safety. While the rejuvenated Times Square is unquestionably safer and more pleasurable, some criticise that the neighbourhood has lost its spark and is now a thoroughly clean, "Disneyfied" version of its previous self.
