This is one of our favorite Halloween crafts for kids. It's fast and simple, can be done with a crowd if necessary, and is a superb way to exercise cutting and fine motor skills with smaller kids. Older kids can let their creativity take over and create several really wacky Halloween spiders!

What you are going to need:

Black construction paper

Scissors

Glue or sticky-tape

Googly eyes (optional) or scraps of paper and pens

Instructions:

Cut a rectangle of paper approximately 3 X 3 1/2 inches. Fold the short edge over about an inch to produce a crease, and open it up again.

Turn the paper making sure that the crease is horizontal, then cut the paper in seven even lines up to the crease making eight spider's legs. When working with younger kids, draw in the lines for them so they can repeat cutting on. For older children, show them how to make the initial cut in the middle, isolating the space below the crease into 2 halves. Then show them the way to divide each half again to create quarters, and then the quarters to make eighths. There is no need to be overly accurate.

Next, wrap the spider around the child's finger and secure using sticky-tape or glue. Remove the spider again and decorate - either with bits of paper or with funny eyes. Put the spider back on the finger then twist the legs into shape or curl them around a pencil.

Variations:

Dangle the spiders! Simply cut a strip of black yarn (wool) and attach inside the top of the spider using a small piece of sticky-tape.

Create smaller versions of these spiders to decorate the tips of Halloween pencils.

Wrap small spiders on straws to adorn your Halloween table! Make a number of bigger spiders and scatter them across the table as well.

Cut a small cut on both sides of the spider's head and insert a name card to turn these spiders into spooky place markers!

When the body of the spider has been finished but before adorning, place a black pipe cleaner around the head of the spider making a furry result. The extending end of the pipe cleaner could very well be bent into a hook design, that will make the spider easy to hang from shelves, the tops of doors, and other eerie places! Attach cartoon eyes on the top of the pipe cleaner.
